FEATURED / THE PEDIGREE CHART

Pedigree Chart

See the linebreedings.
Recognize the family.

The Pedigree Chart is designed to reveal all COI-related linebreedings within the displayed generations and available records. Color coding identifies repeated ancestry; distinctive borders and polka-dot highlighting bring full siblings into view.

Why siblings matter

Different names can conceal the same influential family. A full brother on the Sire’s side and his full sister on the Dam’s side both lead back to the same parents. Looking only for a repeated dog’s name can miss this connection.

Full siblings inherit different genetic combinations from the same Sire and Dam. Following both siblings reveals separate routes through that family and helps you examine how its influence recurs across the pedigree.

Our Pedigree Chart highlights full siblings alongside direct linebreedings. Use those connections to evaluate performance, health, temperament, and producing records across several relatives. A family’s consistency matters; a single outstanding dog does not establish what every relative will pass on.

Understand the ancestry behind the percentage. Use the Pedigree Chart alongside COI analysis and ancestor reports to connect the visual pattern with its calculated contribution. Sibling highlighting adds context; their shared ancestors underpin the COI calculation.

01 / THE APPROACH

Our Goals & Approach

Better information.
More informed breeding decisions.

For field-trial breeders, the goal is performance: dogs with the potential to place, earn JAMs, and win. PI helps you investigate which families connect, how strongly they are represented, and which descendants carry them through each parental side.

Research. Breeding. Socialization and training.

Start by researching the families behind the dogs. Use those findings to weigh the connections and tradeoffs and choose an appropriate breeding for your goals.

After the breeding comes puppy selection, socialization, and training. PI helps with the pedigree research; it does not guarantee the outcome or replace the work of developing the dog.

01

Trace the relationship

Follow sire-side and dam-side routes instead of relying on a single headline percentage.

02

See the context

View inbreeding, relationship, and ancestor diversity together, with generation depth made explicit.

03

Keep it auditable

Understand the contributing ancestors and the paths that inform each calculation.

YOUR KNOWLEDGE BUILDS PI

Better records help you make better-informed decisions.

PI depends on users contributing what they know. Accurate titles, parent links, and offspring records give you and other members more information when researching a family.

Add a dog or correct its pedigree

Use New Dog Entry for a missing dog. For an existing dog, open Dog Info & Edit to correct its details or parentage.

Keep titles current

Choose Update titles in Dog Info. Record FC, AFC, NFC, NAFC, or other titles, and include a source when you have one.

Connect the next generation

Choose Add offspring in Dog Info or Progeny to start with that parent already filled in. Add the other parent when known. Those parent links connect the offspring to its family and its parents’ Progeny lists.

Progeny summarizes recorded FC, AFC, NFC, and NAFC offspring and lets you inspect the dogs behind each count. As these records grow, they can strengthen producing research. PI does not yet offer complete performance records or a validated producing ranking.

Open PI to contribute

Approved members contribute inside PI. Search for the dog first to avoid creating a duplicate.

Color-Coded Linebreeding Pedigree (with Siblings)

The PI Pedigree Chart makes repeated ancestors and full-sibling relationships easier to recognize across the Sire and Dam sides.

COLOR KEY
Solid Color: Linebreeding

Each color traces a repeated ancestor through independent linebreeding paths.

Polka Dots: Full Siblings

Matching dots and borders identify full siblings on opposite sides, sharing the same Sire and Dam.

Together, these patterns reveal recurring families alongside COI, COR, and AVK, without changing the calculations.

Read the full explanation

The PI Pedigree Chart uses solid colors to identify independent linebreedings within the displayed generations. Each color helps trace repeated ancestors through the Sire and Dam sides of the pedigree, making relationships easier to recognize and investigate.

Full siblings receive distinctive polka-dot highlighting with matching colored borders. When a brother and sister appear on opposite sides of a pedigree, their shared Sire and Dam reveal a family connection that examining repeated names alone may overlook.

By highlighting both individual ancestors and full-sibling relationships, the color-coded pedigree helps researchers recognize the influence of recurring dogs and families.

These visual relationships complement COI, COR, and AVK analysis. They provide additional pedigree context without changing the underlying calculations.

QUESTIONS IT HELPS ANSWER

Where do individual ancestors and full-sibling families recur through the Sire and Dam sides of the pedigree?

Reports and measures depend on the completeness and accuracy of the supplied pedigree.

FAQs

Section 5 of 5 · Final Section

A little more clarity.

How does my contribution help?

Accurate parentage connects families. Current titles record achievement. Adding offspring with their sire and dam builds a clearer picture of a dog’s recorded progeny. Together, these contributions make pedigree research more useful for your breeding goals and for other members.

Updates are attributed and sent for Admin review. They can appear in PI while review is pending. A supplied source supports the record; it does not mean PI has independently verified it. Missing titles or offspring mean the database may be incomplete—not that a dog was unsuccessful.

What is PI, and how is it related to Tarshish Labs?

PI stands for Pedigree Intelligence. The PI Database is the canine pedigree research platform from Tarshish Labs, focused on Field Trial and Hunt Test Retrievers. Current records primarily cover Labrador Retriever field-trial pedigrees, and all retriever breeds are welcome.

Is the PI Database open to everyone?

Not yet. This homepage is public, while the analytical workspace remains available only to accounts that have been authorized for access.

Are the ancestry calculations based on DNA testing?

No. The COI, COR, and AVK measures described here are derived from pedigree records and statistical ancestry models. They are not substitutes for DNA-based measurements.

Does a deeper pedigree always mean a better answer?

More generations can reveal previously unseen relationships, but results still depend on accurate and sufficiently complete source records. Generation depth must accompany the interpretation.
